BIT Inspection

90 DAY BIT INSPECTION

PROFESSIONAL BIT INSPECTIONS

The BIT Program mandates that all commercial vehicles based and operational within California, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or higher, must undergo a comprehensive safety examination, known as the BIT inspection, every 90 days. In accordance with definitions provided by both the State of California and the U.S. Department of Transportation, a commercial motor vehicle encompasses any self-propelled or towed vehicle utilized on interstate (crossing state lines) or intrastate (within a single state) highways for the transportation of passengers or cargo. A BIT Safety Inspection involves a thorough examination of a vehicle, covering all major system components on a truck or trailer, with a focus on identifying any worn or faulty parts.

BE CONFIDENT IN YOUR FLEET

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) serves as the authoritative body overseeing the BIT Program. Under the BIT Program, specific components on every commercial motor vehicle must undergo inspections at a minimum interval of 90 days, and in some cases, more frequently as dictated by the vehicle's usage and application. For instance, vehicles engaged in the transportation of exceptionally heavy loads or Passenger Buses may necessitate inspections more frequently than the standard 90-day interval. Furthermore, aside from conducting "Terminal Inspections" at your business location, where a Motor Carrier Specialist Officer from the CHP assesses maintenance and driver records, vehicles are also subject to roadside inspections at weigh scales. In both scenarios, the onus is on ensuring that your vehicle complies with safety and regulatory standards.
